2026 NFES field trip – Padova/Bologna (Italy) in September 2026

NFES invites our members to join the Field Trip to Padova/Bologna Italy, scheduled on 24–28 September 2026 (Thursday through Monday). Please sign up before June 2, 2026.

The field trip guide will be Prof. Massimiliano Ghinassi (Gino), University of Padova, who will take us through a varied and fascinating agenda covering turbidite systems, Apennine basins, and the iconic Po River delta. As before, the program will comprise a mix of geology, history, culture, and the inherent social aspect.

Preliminary information about the field excursion

  • Day 1 – Imola: Turbiditic deposits of the Santerno Valley and evaporites of the Messinian Salinity Crisis. The famous Marnoso-Arenacea Formation, where fundamental principles of turbidite sedimentology were established by Mutti and Ricci Lucchi in the 1970s.

  • Day 2 – Bologna: The intra-Apennine basin. Pliocene fluvial and deltaic deposits filling a small thrust-top basin evolving at the front of the Northern Apennines.

  • Day 3 – Adriatic Sea: The Po River delta (UNESCO site). A boat trip along the main distributaries of the Po River delta, observing modern depositional environments and comparing them with sedimentary cores recovered from the same area.

  • Day 4 – Venice: Explore Venice — culture and history.
